Hurricane Story: Mr. Wilson's Family

Hurricane Helene Survivor Story: Mr. Wilson

Water came up the steps of the front porch, flooding into the front door, swept into the crawlspace and up through the floor boards. What had only been a creek in front of this home became a ravaging river overtaking it.

There has been a home in that space for over 120 years. His mom grew up there and then he grew up there. Precious memories of childhood filled that home. They never thought that it would be destroyed and uninhabitable in a matter of hours during Hurricane Helene. Soon after the river crested, they realized the amount of damage that had been done. Mold and mildew began to grow rapidly up the walls and into the second story of the home.

Mr. Wilson’s family had to make the difficult decision to start over. The cost of raising the home and restoring it to prevent this sort of destruction again would out way the cost of rebuilding. 5 months later, the home has began construction thanks to our incredible partners and teams! This is our first complete rebuild of a home for Hurricane Helene survivors! We are honored to get to come alongside Mr. Wilson and help him rebuild his parent’s new home! Soon they will be able to move from his home into a place of their own! To begin to make new memories filled with joy and hope!

Thank you to all our partners that continue to give and support the mission of the ADC. We want to see every home destroyed by Helene rebuilt and every life restored to fullness! If you’d like to partner with us in this journey, you can donate today at ashevilledreamcenter.org/give!
